For Eugene de Mazenod, Oblates were consecrated to God under the patronage of Mary. In the decree of approbation it is stated, “We wish the Congregation to be known by the name of the CONGREGATION OF THE MISSIONARY OBLATES OF MARY IMMACULATE”. All the missionary endeavors of the Oblates would be carried out under the patronage of Mary. After the approbation, Eugene wrote to his Oblates, “Does it not seem to you that it is a sign of predestination to bear the name of Oblates of Mary, that is, men consecrated to God in His poor under the patronage of Mary “. Eugene frequently urged his Oblates to propagate true devotion to her. Indeed this was always regarded as a special duty of their vocation. In the early rule of the Congregation Eugene urged that “all members of the Society cultivate a particular and affectionate devotion towards Mary, to whom they will always look, as their Mother “. Throughout his life Eugene had a deep-rooted devotion to Mary Immaculate, his Mother, and he died hearing his Oblate sons chanting the hymn SALVE REGINA .

1. St Eugene consecrated his new found mission to Mary. What does consecration mean to you? What are you willing to consecrate to Mary?
2. Our love for Mary can be cursory at times. What is something we can do to deepen our relationship with Her?
